Restorative Dentistry in Toledo

Restorative dentistry refers to the various ways we are able to replace missing teeth or repair missing parts of the tooth structure. Tooth structure can be missing due to decay or fracture of a tooth.

Tooth Fillings

The concept of a tooth filling is replacing and restoring your tooth structure that is damaged due to decay or fracture with a material. Treatment plans are developed with your individual needs and include the most current materials including white fillings (composites) to restore your smile and teeth to a more natural look and feel.

Root Canals

We are proud to offer our patients the latest in root canal therapy. A root canal is a procedure that extracts decayed pulp from the central part of the tooth, reshapes the canal and replaces it with strengthened filler. A common misconception is that a root canal is a painful procedure. Actually, root canals are similar to having a cavity filled, producing minimal pain.

Tooth Decay

Caries, or tooth decay, is a preventable disease. Tooth decay may negatively impact your quality of life. Current research suggests that bacteria from the mouth have far wider associations with other medical problems.

When your teeth and gums are consistently exposed to large amounts of starches and sugars, acids may form that begin to eat away at tooth enamel. Carbohydrate-rich foods such as candy, cookies, soft drinks, and even fruit juices leave deposits on your teeth. Those deposits bond with the bacteria that normally survive in your mouth and form plaque. The combination of deposits and plaque forms acids that can damage the mineral structure of teeth, with tooth decay resulting.

Tooth Extractions

A tooth extraction is the complete removal of a tooth. Extractions are sometimes necessary if a primary tooth is preventing the normal eruption of a permanent tooth, if the tooth has suffered extensive tooth decay or trauma that cannot be repaired, if a patient has gum disease, or if the tooth is impacted (usually the wisdom teeth).

Depending on the complexity of the case, an extraction can be performed surgically or non-surgically. We offer complimentary Nitrous Oxide (laughing gas), numbing gels and other comforts to help make your procedure as comfortable as possible.

Crowns

Crowns are a cosmetic restoration used to strengthen a tooth or improve its shape. They are most often used for teeth that are broken, worn, or partially destroyed by tooth decay. Crowns are “cemented” onto an existing tooth and fully cover the portion of your tooth above the gum line. The crown becomes your tooth’s new outer surface.

Crowns can be made of porcelain, metal, or both. Porcelain crowns are most often preferred because they mimic the look of natural teeth and are very strong.

Bridges

A bridge fills the space left by a missing tooth, restoring both the appearance and function of your smile. When a tooth is lost, the surrounding teeth can begin to shift into the empty space, leading to bite problems (occlusion), jaw discomfort, and an increased risk of periodontal disease. A dental bridge helps prevent these issues by maintaining proper tooth alignment and supporting the natural structure of your bite.

In addition to preserving oral health, bridges can improve chewing ability, speech, and overall comfort. By replacing missing teeth, a bridge helps distribute biting forces evenly, reducing unnecessary stress on surrounding teeth.

Dental Implants

An implant is a replacement tooth root in the shape of a post that is surgically placed into the jawbone. The “root” is usually made of titanium — the same material used in many replacement hips and knees, and a metal that pairs well with human bone.

A replacement tooth is then fixed to the post. The tooth can be either permanently attached or removable. Permanent teeth are more stable and feel more like natural teeth.

The ideal candidate for implants is a non-smoker who has good oral health, including a sufficient amount of bone in the jaw, and healthy gums with no sign of gum disease.

Dentures

Dentures are removable, natural-looking replacement teeth designed to restore your smile, improve chewing, and support clear speech.

There are three main types of dentures. Full Dentures replace all teeth in the upper or lower arch when natural teeth are no longer present. Partial Dentures replace one or more missing teeth and attach to existing natural teeth for support. Implant-Supported Dentures are secured to dental implants, providing enhanced stability, comfort, and function that closely resemble natural teeth.

No matter which option is right for you, dentures can help restore your ability to eat, speak, and smile with confidence while maintaining the appearance and health of your mouth.
